Philippians 2:3-4

Philippians 2:3-4

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.

Church life and Christian friendship are never meant to be about constant arguing or personal pride. The apostle urges believers to keep away from clashes that arise out of stubbornness, empty rivalry, or a longing to be recognized above others (Philippians 2:3). He’s not telling us to ignore healthy debate for the sake of the gospel, but to reject the sort of spirit that insists on having our way merely for the sake of being right or looking important. When pride takes root, people act like Diotrephes—refusing to listen and always wanting the last word (3 John 1:9). Such attitudes undermine the comfort, unity, and peace that are meant to mark God’s family.

Instead, true Christian humility is key. Adopt the mindset that others might in fact be wiser, more seasoned, or further along in their walk with the Lord than you are. Not that you deny your gifts or ignore your stewardship, but that you count fellow believers as valuable and worthy, accepting their experience and input with genuine respect (Ephesians 4:2). Humility means listening carefully, lowering ourselves, and giving up our preferences for the sake of unity.

In practical terms, this humility changes how we live. Don’t just look out for your own needs, interests, or reputation; notice and honor the gifts, perspectives, and successes of others, choosing what builds up Christ’s body instead of what advances your own cause (Philippians 2:4). Lift your eyes to the good of the whole church and seek ways to serve. In doing so, you reflect the attitude of Christ and help to foster a spirit of peace, trust, and love in your community.

As you go about your day, ask God to clothe you with humility and to open your heart to others’ wisdom, so that His family might flourish in unity and grace.
