Matthew 16:26

Matthew 16:26

What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?

Imagine someone spending their whole life chasing after achievement, comfort, and influence—dreaming of riches, respect, and even the kind of sweeping power history’s greatest rulers once held. What if, by their cleverness and striving, they actually seized and enjoyed it all? Jesus’ question pierces right through the glitter: what real good is it, if after gaining the entire world you forfeit your own soul? (Matthew 16:26) The trade-off, so often hidden beneath the allure of success, stands revealed as tragic once eternity is in view.

To lose one’s soul is not simply to miss out on some reward or pleasure. It means being forever separated from the presence and goodness of God, suffering the relentless pain of regret and judgment—a worm of conscience that never dies, and a fire that is never quenched (Mark 9:43–482 Thessalonians 1:9). What could a person ever offer that might buy back what’s lost? Even if it were possible to hand over all the wealth, power, and treasures this world can conjure, it would never be enough. The price for the soul is beyond all earthly currency (Psalms 49:7–81 Peter 1:18–19). The only redemption strong enough comes not from our own storehouse, but from the sacrifice of Christ—His own blood, freely given for us (Hebrews 9:12).

If you feel weighed down by the pressure to prove yourself, remember this: the soul is God’s precious creation and cannot be replaced or substituted, no matter what the world offers in exchange. Each one of us is unique, valued, and dearly loved. For those who trust Him, Jesus promises full, eternal life—a treasure that cannot be taken or lost (John 10:28). Take heart; your worth is secure in Him, and there is no richer gain than belonging fully and forever to Christ.
