Proverbs 3:9-10

Proverbs 3:9-10

Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your harvest; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine.

There’s a quiet nobility in using what we have—our resources, time, and energy—to honor God (Proverbs 3:9). This isn’t about showiness or empty gestures, but about intentionally offering back to the Lord from what He has generously provided. What matters isn’t the size of the gift, but that it’s our own, honestly earned and set apart from the heart (Proverbs 3:9). In the Old Testament, God’s people were called to bring their “firstfruits”—the very best and first portion of all their increase—not leftovers or what they wouldn’t miss (Leviticus 23:10). Today, the principle is the same: put God first, not just with words, but in practice, with the things most dear and essential to us.

Sometimes, we might worry that being generous—giving to those in need, supporting Christian work, or providing for ministers of the gospel (1 Timothy 5:17; 1 Corinthians 9:13)—might leave us lacking what we need. But Scripture gently reassures us that honoring God with our substance actually opens the door to His abundant care. The promise is not that we’ll never know need, but that God delights in providing for those who open their hands in faith. Instead of becoming poorer by sharing, we often find our “barns filled with plenty” and our “vats overflowing with new wine” (Proverbs 3:10). God, who names Himself the source of all our blessings, loves to outgive even the most cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:8).

It’s worth remembering, too, that true riches are not just “mammon” or material goods, but the grace and joy that come from walking with God and serving others. As you give, whether much or little, you place your trust in God’s economy—one marked by generosity, sufficiency, and enduring promise. So don’t be afraid to honor the Lord with what you have. Even in seasons when your “barns” feel emptier than you’d like, His faithfulness endures, and He sees your heart.
