Isaiah 53:5

Isaiah 53:5

But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.

Picture the suffering servant, quietly bearing a weight that does not belong to Him. Every wound He receives, every pain He endures, is not for His own guilt or wrongdoing, but because of our rebellion—our crossing of God’s good and perfect law (Isaiah 53:5). These wounds represent the full measure of His suffering, culminating in death itself, taken on so that He could satisfy justice on our behalf. Not only is His body pierced; His entire being is pressed down, crushed under the heavy burden of our iniquity, like grain ground beneath the millstone (1 Peter 2:24).

For centuries, even the teachers of Israel glimpsed this: the Messiah would carry troubles and bear sorrows not His own. He would be deeply moved by the lostness of God’s people, lifting up His voice in sorrow over their sin (Matthew 23:37). The punishment required for our peace—our reconciliation with God—fell on Him. This was not a gentle lesson but a holy act of justice: God’s righteous anger toward sin is fully met, and peace is made, not by our works but by His sacrifice (Romans 5:1).

Look at the vivid image Isaiah paints: “by His wounds, we are healed.” Sin infects every one of us—a deep, stubborn disease. Only Jesus, by suffering in our place, carries away that sickness and brings the healing medicine of forgiveness. He does not heal by issuing stern advice or demanding more effort, but by taking the illness upon Himself (1 John 1:7).

Let this truth settle in your heart today: no matter how deep the sickness of sin, the grace purchased by Christ’s suffering is deeper still. Peace, wholeness, and healing are yours—not in exchange for obedience, but as a gift flowing from the wounds of your loving Savior.
