Philippians 4:8
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think on these things.
Paul wraps up his letter to the Philippians with a wise and loving invitation to fill our minds with what is true and good (Philippians 4:8). He’s speaking to ordinary Christians living in a complicated world, encouraging them to let their thoughts and actions center on things that are genuinely truthful—things that echo God’s word, reflect the message of Christ, and even align with the best brightness found in the world around them, even among those who don’t yet know God. Truth, in every form, stands in contrast to dishonesty, pretense, and empty show.

Next, Paul points us to what is honorable—words, choices, and attitudes that bring dignity into our daily lives. To be “honest” here means living with gravity, respect, and a quiet sense of worth, steering clear of trivialities and shallow theatrics. Imagine someone whose actions and words are marked by quiet strength and steadiness; such a life invites trust and gentle respect from others (Romans 13:13).
He keeps going: whatever is just and right, let that guide our dealings with both God and neighbor—living with an open, fair heart, giving God what is His and people what they are due (Micah 6:8). Paul also lifts up purity; here, he’s thinking of words and deeds free from stain, thoughts and conversations that are innocent, wholesome, and fitting for God’s children.
He invites us to seek what is lovely and worthy of love—qualities that nurture friendship and warmth, things that open the door to peace and healing in families, churches, and communities (Mark 10:21). And finally, Paul tells us to value whatever is of good reputation. He reminds us: a good name is precious, and while we must sometimes let it go for Christ’s sake, we should live in a way that earns the warm regard of others (Ecclesiastes 7:1).
With these things in mind, Paul asks us: “Think on these things.” Dwell on what is noble, good, and praiseworthy. Let these thoughts feed your heart, giving shape to your days—so that, in every ordinary moment, your life quietly reflects the beauty and goodness of Christ.
