John 3:3
Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again. ”
Picture Nicodemus, a respected teacher and leader, coming to Jesus with admiration and curiosity—a man steeped in his tradition, confident in the promises given to his people. Yet, Jesus takes the conversation beyond expectations, cutting through old assumptions with a gracious but weighty answer. He explains that entrance into God’s kingdom isn’t inherited or automatic, even for someone with all the right lineage or learning. Instead, it’s something startling and new: “Unless someone is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3).

Many in Jesus’ day believed that being descended from Abraham was a sure ticket to God’s blessing and future kingdom, a reward secured by ancestry alone (Matthew 3:9). But Jesus gently corrects this thinking. He says that natural birth—even religious zeal or embracing new practices—cannot bring anyone into the life of God’s kingdom. Just as some in Nicodemus’s time thought a convert was like a newborn child, Jesus insists the change must be far deeper and spiritual. It’s not about reshuffling externals or gaining pedigree; true participation in God’s family comes only through a spiritual rebirth.
Being born again is God’s miracle in a person’s heart—a transformation done by the Holy Spirit, making us new at the very core of who we are (Titus 3:5). The marks of this new life are not pride or ritual, but a humble, God-shaped heart; a love for righteousness, peace, and joy that comes from the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17). Jesus’s call is not for us to clean up our exterior or cling to spiritual heritage, but to let God change us from the inside out.
Take comfort: this spiritual rebirth is not reserved for the religious elite or those with perfect backgrounds. God offers it freely to all who look to Christ in humble faith. His kingdom opens its gates to the needy and the seeking—anyone willing to be made new by His gracious power.
