Romans 6:23

Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Picture, for a moment, a soldier standing at the end of a long campaign. He has followed orders, marched through valleys, and battled in difficult fields. Now, he stands ready to receive the reward for all his service. Paul draws on this image when he writes, “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). Sin, in all its forms—whether hidden or open, small or great—marches us steadily toward its terrible payday, which is death. This isn’t just the physical end that comes to every person; it’s also the sorrow and separation that sin sows between us and God—the kind of inward death that leaves the heart cold and barren (Genesis 2:17Ephesians 2:1).

Yet, for believers, the sting of death is removed. Christ has entered our desperate situation and suffered on our behalf, taking the curse and penalty of sin’s wages with Him to the cross (1 Corinthians 15:55–57). While affliction and physical death still touch us, they are no longer sharp with dread or punishment—they are transformed, mere shadows rather than terrors.

But where sin pays wages, God gives gifts. The contrast couldn’t be clearer. “The gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). Notice the word “gift.” Eternal life isn’t a fair payment for anything we’ve done—it isn’t a prize for those who serve faithfully enough. Instead, it’s God’s overflowing generosity: the righteousness of Christ credited to us, the new heart that loves what is good, and the hope of living forever in God’s joyful presence (Ephesians 2:8–9John 10:28).

So, let your heart rest in this: where sin offers a grim and certain wage, God offers a glad and undeserved gift. And in Christ, that gift is yours—today and forever. No matter the struggle, your final reward rests not in your performance, but in the open hands of a gracious God.
