1 Corinthians 1:31

1 Corinthians 1:31

Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.”

We all know the subtle temptation: to measure our worth by what we know, what we have, or what we can do. The world rewards this kind of self-made boasting—praising intelligence, wealth, and strength. Yet, the Scriptures urge us to check our hearts and remember a far better foundation for our confidence and joy. The prophet Jeremiah offers this wisdom: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, nor the mighty in his might, nor the rich in his riches” (Jeremiah 9:23). Instead, he points us to something richer and more lasting.

The true ground for all celebration is not what we have achieved or gathered, but what God Himself has given us in Christ. Jesus embodies all that we need—He is our wisdom when we are confused, our righteousness when we see our sin, our sanctification as we grow, and our redemption from every bondage (1 Corinthians 1:30). When our hearts are tempted to compare or to feel superior, the Spirit gently reminds us: every good thing comes as an undeserved gift through Christ.

We often hear that to have self-confidence, we must focus on our own accomplishments, but the gospel invites us to a deeper and sweeter assurance—confidence in the Lord alone (Psalm 34:2). The invitation is not into insecurity, but into a joyful freedom from the pressure to promote ourselves. When we learn to “boast in the Lord,” our lives become filled with gratitude, and our eyes are opened to His goodness at work in and through us.

So as you go through your day, if you find yourself tempted to rest in your own strength or mourn your weaknesses, remember where true glory lies. Rest in Christ, your only boast, and let His love be the headline of your life (Galatians 6:14).
