2 Timothy 2:15
Make every effort to present yourself approved to God, an unashamed workman who accurately handles the word of truth.
When Paul urges Timothy to “do your best to present yourself to God as one approved,” he isn’t talking about performing for the applause of a crowd or straining for the promotions of men (2 Timothy 2:15). The focus is far higher. God’s approval is set apart from human opinion—He looks for a worker marked by sincerity and faithfulness, not a performer eager to please the shifting standards of the world (Galatians 1:10). Our calling is to speak God’s truth with honesty and courage, knowing our sense of purpose and approval comes from Him alone.
Imagine a craftsman working at his bench. The true worker, diligent and attentive, has no need to hide mistakes or blush with embarrassment. In the same way, those who faithfully share God’s Word—through preaching or everyday conversation—are like trustworthy builders who handle the materials well, unashamed of their message or their method (Romans 1:16). This kind of labor is noble, but never easy; it calls for God-given perseverance, wisdom, and a steady heart (1 Corinthians 3:9).
When Paul says to “rightly divide the word of truth,” he is calling us to careful, skillful handling of Scripture. This means more than reciting verses or dissecting grammar. Like a wise cook preparing a meal, or a steward giving just the right portion to each family member, we are to understand and apply God’s Word in ways that meet real needs—feeding the young in faith, challenging the mature, and always holding Christ at the center (Proverbs 3:6; 1 Corinthians 4:1-2). There’s no place for twisting or trimming Scripture to suit our own ideas, nor for keeping back hard truths that God has entrusted to us (Acts 20:27).
So, press on in your study, whether you serve from the pulpit or in daily life. Approach the Bible with care, prayer, and humility, trusting God to guide your understanding and your words. And know that when you seek to honor Him, He will strengthen you for the task, and one day, His approval will carry you home with great joy (Matthew 25:21).
