John 1:12

But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God—

When John writes that to “all who received him,” he means those who believe in His name—those who welcome Jesus as the eternal Word, the true Son of God, the Messiah, and the Saviour sent for us (John 1:12). Even though most turned away, there were always some who, by faith, opened their hearts to Christ. True faith means not just knowing about Jesus, but depending on Him for forgiveness, new life, and every spiritual blessing—a welcome that comes with empty hands, trusting Him to fill them (John 1:16).

To those who trust Him, God gives a truly priceless gift: “the right to become children of God” (John 1:12). This isn’t something we can earn, choose, or inherit naturally—not a status given to everyone by default, or by rigid religious effort, family line, or merit. It’s a privilege of adoption, made possible by Jesus and secured by the Father’s eternal plan (Ephesians 1:5). The Holy Spirit brings this truth home to our hearts, assuring us quietly and certainly that we truly belong to God’s household (Romans 8:15–16).

Think of it: to be called a child of God is to be welcomed into the warmth and safety of the Father’s family, with a full share of all that He promises—far more precious than the highest earthly status. This identity carries dignity, love, and security, and it will never fade away (1 Peter 1:3–4). Yet it is faith that makes this blessing known and real in our own lives. God had you in His heart long before you ever believed, but it’s when you trust Jesus that you come to know, claim, and enjoy the comfort of being His beloved child.

So if you struggle to feel worthy or accepted, remember: your place in God’s family rests entirely on His grace, received through trusting Christ. That is an honor nothing on earth can compare to, secure forever, and waiting for all who believe in His name.
