Psalm 46:10

“Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted over the earth.”

When chaos swirls and anxiety knocks on our door, the voice of God comes gently yet firmly: “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). Some have imagined these words as a command to the hostile nations, urging them to lay down arms and recognize God’s sovereign power—perhaps even as a signal that their attacks against Jerusalem must come to an end. But if we listen closely, especially in the flow of this psalm, these words ring as an invitation to God’s own people, especially the fearful and weary in the midst of upheaval.

Being “still” is not about shutting out the world or falling into inactivity, like unmoved stones unable to feel or care. Rather, it means putting aside frantic worry, laying down the urge to control or panic, and accepting—heart and soul—that God is fully in charge. He asks us to trust His steady hand even when we feel surrounded by disaster (Psalm 46:2-3). “Know that I am God” is not just information for the mind, but a summons for the heart: remember His promises, rest assured in His faithfulness and strength, and believe that He sees, knows, and perfectly directs even what we cannot comprehend (Romans 8:28Isaiah 46:9-10).

God declares with certainty, “I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth” (Psalm 46:10). Whether through drawing hearts from every nation to Christ or by ultimately putting down all rebellion, His glory will not be denied (Revelation 11:15Zechariah 14:9). This coming day of honor for Christ, where faith becomes sight and His reign fills the world, should breathe courage and hope into our present waiting, no matter how dark the moment.

So amid restless days, let these words settle you. Quiet your soul, lift your eyes, and remember: the Lord who rules over all history is your refuge now, and His victory is certain.
