1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

There’s a real comfort in the simple phrase: “If we confess our sins.” We might wonder, does this mean we must list every wrongdoing in detail to another person? Scripture encourages us to be honest about our faults, especially with those we have wronged (James 5:16). But when it comes to the sins that cut deepest—those moments only God sees—the invitation is to bring them straight to Him. We can come to our Father in prayer, owning our failures and humbly recognizing how much we need His mercy (Psalm 32:5). The Spirit stirs true conviction in our hearts, leading us not just to regret, but to a sorrow that seeks grace—a repentance with no regret attached (2 Corinthians 7:10).

When we confess, we discover something remarkable about God: He is both faithful to His promises and just in His dealings. The forgiveness offered isn’t based on how well we confess or how many tears we shed. Instead, it flows from what Christ has accomplished for us—His sacrifice fully satisfies God’s justice and opens the door to mercy (Romans 3:25-26). This means that when God forgives, He’s staying true to His character—always righteous, always merciful (Proverbs 28:13Daniel 4:27).

The verse goes on to say He cleanses us from “all unrighteousness.” Notice how generous this is—not a surface washing, but a deep, complete cleansing. God doesn’t leave us half-forgiven or half-clean. The burden of guilt is lifted every time the blood of Jesus is lovingly applied to us by faith (Hebrews 9:14). Whether we are coming for the hundredth or thousandth time, His grace is just as sufficient.

So, whenever you find your heart weighed down, remember you can go to Him honestly. He always meets you with forgiveness and a fresh start. In Christ, we always find both justice and mercy holding us fast (1 John 1:9).
