2 Corinthians 6:14
Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership can righteousness have with wickedness? Or what fellowship does light have with darkness?
Paul paints a vivid picture using the language of farming: “Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers” (2 Corinthians 6:14). This is more than a simple rule; it draws from a rich Old Testament image, where the law said not to yoke together an ox and a donkey (Deuteronomy 22:10). Just as those animals are too different in strength and temperament to plow straight, believers are called to be careful about the deep partnerships they form, especially when it comes to their faith and worship.

This isn’t a blanket command to avoid all contact or relationships with nonbelievers. Everyday life—working, living, and even some family ties—means that God’s people will rub shoulders with all sorts, and that’s both necessary and sometimes a real chance to shine Christ’s light (1 Corinthians 5:9-10). Nor is Paul urging Christians to abandon marriages where a spouse does not believe (1 Corinthians 7:12-14). Still, Paul’s main concern here is about sharing in practices—especially worship—that betray the heart of trust in Christ alone, as some in Corinth were tempted to do when invited to idols’ feasts (1 Corinthians 10:14).
Think of it this way: light and darkness cannot share the same space, and righteousness and lawlessness march to very different tunes. If you belong to Jesus, His righteousness covers you and His Spirit lights up your path (Romans 14:17). When you’re yoked closely with those who don’t know Him, the pressure to compromise can pull you off course, exposing you to unnecessary heartache and confusion.
Take heart, then: you are called into the freedom of Christ, to walk as children of light even when surrounded by darkness (Ephesians 5:8). It’s not about building walls—it’s about guarding your heart, walking wisely, and treasuring the joy that comes from being set apart for God’s good purposes.
