1 John 4:1
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God. For many false prophets have gone out into the world.
It’s easy, in a world full of spiritual voices and confident teachers, to get swept up in every message that claims to be from God. John writes to warn us: don’t put your trust in just anyone who claims spiritual authority (1 John 4:1). Some possess real gifting and calling; they speak by the Holy Spirit’s power, pointing us to Christ and His truth. But others, despite clever words or learned backgrounds, lack that genuine life from above. They may use the right language, and even inspire crowds, but their teaching doesn’t line up with the core message of Christ or the authority of Scripture.
God calls every believer—not just pastors or church leaders—to be thoughtful and discerning. As the believers in Berea once did, don’t accept every teaching uncritically, but check it against the Word of God (Acts 17:11). Not every new idea, charismatic speaker, or spiritual trend passes this test. Our faith isn’t meant to be suspicious or cynical, but anchored and wise. God’s truth isn’t threatened by honest questions or careful testing; in fact, that’s how we honor Him, staying devoted to what’s truly from His Spirit (Revelation 2:2).
Unfortunately, there have always been plenty of false voices—people who slip into churches, sometimes even with good intentions, but who end up leading others away from the heart of the gospel (Matthew 24:11). Jesus himself warned us about them, and their presence should not frighten us—but it does call us to steady vigilance, tested by Scripture and guided by the gentle wisdom of the Spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:21). God has given us both His Word and His Spirit, and even the humblest believer can seek discernment and hold firmly to what is true.
So don’t be anxious or discouraged when confronted by a dizzying array of opinions and teachers. God’s faithful children are not left alone; keep searching the Scriptures, keep asking for wisdom, and trust that God will always guide you into what’s best.
