1 John 3:16

By this we know what love is: Jesus laid down His life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.

When we pause and reflect on the love God has shown us, the most vivid picture comes to light—not in vague feelings, but in a concrete, breathtaking act. We come to know real love by looking to Jesus, the Son of God, who—being truly divine, glorious, and eternal—chose to lay down His life on our behalf (1 John 3:16). His sacrifice isn’t built on anything worthy or lovable in us, but purely rooted in the abundance of His mercy and the depth of His affection for us (Romans 5:8). We don’t earn this kind of love, and we could never pay it back. It is freely given, the truest gift (Ephesians 2:8-9).

It’s easy to imagine that such love is far above us—unreachable, meant only as a grand example. But the apostle points us in a different direction. This love was shown for us so we could also show genuine love to each other. We’re not called to repeat Christ’s atoning act—no one but Jesus can rescue another from sin’s power (Psalm 49:7-8). Instead, we’re invited, as members of His family, to be willing—even at cost or risk—to lay down our comfort, rights, or even our very lives for our brothers and sisters when God calls us to it (John 15:13). Throughout history, God’s people—like Priscilla and Aquila, who risked their lives for Paul (Romans 16:3-4)—have walked this path of self-sacrificial love.

Let the example of Jesus inspire, rather than intimidate. Our daily acts of kindness, forgiveness, and courage may seem small, but each one echoes His self-giving heart. As you love others in practical, sometimes costly ways, remember: you are never alone. Christ’s Spirit fuels every sacrifice, and in serving your fellow believers, you reflect the love that first found and saved you (1 John 4:11). Rest in the assurance that this love came down for you, and now works through you, to the glory of God.
